Are you a heavy drinker?
I do not claim to be an expert on alcohol or its use but I do know one thing, more than 21 'units' a week for a man or 14 'units' a week for a woman can lead to health problems!!! If you consume more than the above then you should class yourself as a heavy alcohol user as far as the three day detox is concerned.

Cheesy Crumpets *Very easy
This is a fantastic snack because it is extremely cheap, very easy to make and the kids love it because it looks like a mini pizza!
Ingredients:
2 crumpets A knob of butter
60g of cheddar 3 cherry tomatoes
A pinch of salt A pinch of black pepper
Method:
Pop the crumpets in the toaster and turn the grill on the oven to medium
Slice or grate the cheddar cheese and slice the tomatoes thinly
When the crumpets are golden take them out of the toaster and spread with butter. Then place the cheese and tomatoes on top like so and season with the salt and pepper (according to taste) then pop them under the grill until the cheese is bubbling
Serve immediately but be careful as the cheese will be very hot
Tip: Serve with some fresh rocket salad drizzled in olive oil for a really quick and different lunch. You can cut out the butter too if you are watching those calories.

Triple filter
I personally don't buy bottled water because the tap water in my area is very good quality (I have researched this). But to speak honestly, bottled is probably best in 80% of cases, if you can afford it.
However, I do triple filter every drop of water I consume and that includes all the water I use for tea, coffee and cooking. Simply put, I pour my water through a Brita Aluna filter jug THREE times and I find this gives excellent water quality and it also tastes great! I included the link above because it shows you can get the jug for £7:99 it's also reviewed.
Tip: Boiling water makes it safe to drink (usually) but it DOES NOT purify it!!! Some people think they can get away with using boiled water as an alternative but it is a myth.

Radders' Rants
What can I juice
You can juice almost all fruit and vegetables but there are just a few things to remember. Here they are:
- NEVER try to juice banana or avocado they are too starchy and will clog the juicer
- ALWAYS remove large stones from fruit (like peaches) before juicing
- You can leave the peel on citrus fruits but it WILL make the juice bitter
- You CANNOT juice mushrooms, shoots or grasses in a centrifugal juicer
- You can juice potatoes and onions but they are NOT NICE so best avoided
- REMOVE the core from apples before juicing as they contain traces of arsenic
Happy juicing!!!
Tip: If you have fruit or vegetables in the home which are close to perishing and are unlikely to be used then juice them up and save them from the bin!

Straining stock
When you have finished cooking your stock you will need to drain it through a fine steel sieve (like the one in the picture). This will remove all the remaining impurities and slime, leaving you with a lovely clear stock ready to concentrate!!! Make sure you pour it through slowly trying not to force it as this will give you clearer stock.

Skimming stock
Skimming stock is an essential part of the process. It basically removes grease and impurities from the stock which prevents it from becoming cloudy and tasting bitter. I cannot emphasise the importance of skimming enough, failure to do this simple step will result in a very poor quality stock.
How to:
Once the stock has come up to heat and is bubbling nicely you will notice a frothy scum forming on the surface. This is what we need to remove. Using a large shallow spoon go across the top of the stock collecting as much scum as you can. Run the spoon under cold water first as this will help to draw the scum to the spoon. Try not to remove too much liquid though!

Generally speaking I repeat this skimming every ten minutes or so for the first hour of cooking (except vegetable stock which only needs skimming once). You should find the scum will become less and less.

knives
Here are some pictures of my knives. All cooks should own a variety of quality knives from a cleaver to a small vegetable knife and a sharpening steel. As you can see my knives are Stellar Sabatier (except the cleaver), they are reasonably priced (around £80) and come in a stylish worktop holding block. I have laid them out here on my chopping board for easy viewing.

It's all in a box
The box scheme is a very simple and effective way of getting your organic fruit, vegetables and much more. With over 100,000 registered users in the UK alone it is also catching on fast. More and more farms across the country are switching back to traditional farming and becoming organic certified. When a farm decides to do this it can be difficult for them to cut a living because the big supermarkets want everything (including organic) pre-washed in chlorine or the vegetables have to be an exact size, colour or shape. Madness!!! Most farmers who use modern methods won't even TOUCH the produce in their fields let alone eat it because of all the chemicals involved. Watch this interesting short video for some insight. This is where the box scheme comes in. Basically, a lot of organic farms can come together as a co-operative to produce a massive variety of good quality, natural food and then a coordinating company can deliver this food straight from the field to peoples homes in a box. Most of these companies operate online so it is very easy to set up a regular delivery and very easy to ammend the items you want. Most box schemes will deliver weekly, fortnightly or monthly and will offer easy methods of payment. Wherever you live in the UK you will have access to a well established box scheme. Here is a list of some of the best box schemes from across the country:
Riverford
Although the largest in the country with 45,000 customers this family company holds to its founding traditions and ethic. Through franchised drivers they deliver boxes of fresh seasonal, locally farmed produce to households across the country via their network of sister farms. It also offers fruit and salad boxes, Prices start at £8.95.
Boxfresh Organics
Right through helping to plan crops and talking prices with growers, this company speaks to farmers in its collective on a daily basis, and covers the West Country right through to the North Midlands. Its value organic box is just £13.49.
Doorstep Organics
Tending to northern English counties, this friendly, green thinking service supports Yorkshire famers in supplying organic produce that is Soil Association approved. With mixed boxes ranging from £12, they will also refill your eco-friendly household products when you leave your empty veg box out for collection each week.
Northumbria Organics
The largest outfit of this kind in the north-east, this team is committed to sourcing certified organic fruit, vegetables and fresh eggs from local sources for local people. The company offers free delivery to Newcastle and the surrounding areas. Although their website is very limited their service and produce is excellent.
Sunnyfields
One of the oldest Organic businesses in the UK, Sunnyfields delivers fruit and veg boxes, specialist herbs, dairy and a great selection of meat and poultry. It is green thinking and flexible to suit individual customers, aiming to provide high quality produce throughout the year.
Abel and Cole
With 20 years experience of organic produce delivery Abel and Cole have been around a bit. They pride themselves on service, customer satisfaction and their ability to exceed expectation. They are a large business with a good delivery area and boxes start at around £10.95.
The Advantages:
By signing up to a box scheme you are helping to protect the environment, jobs, traditional farming along with its unique skills, the welfare of animals and most importantly your health. The food is delivered right to your door which saves you precious time in the supermarket and lots of transportation fuel. The box is collected at the next delivery to be reused so there is very little packaging and everything comes straight from the fields so no nasty chemical washes. You always get a good feeling when you see the box, you can smell the goodness and see the beautiful colours and textures just waiting to be turned into meals worth having!
Box scheme operators closely monitor their prices against the big four supermarkets on a monthly basis and although the comparison goes up and down by a few percent the box schemes average 21% cheaper than the supermarkets. That is a big, big saving!!!

Mechanical juicer
The mechanical juicer is a very versatile machine and they are cheap but all this comes at a price. The mechanical juicer is ideally suited to juicing leafy greens and grass/sprouts. It will handle soft fruit without much problem but will struggle with hard fruits and vegetables. The mechanical juicer is very portable too so you can take it anywhere (even where there is no electricity). Overall it is a handy machine and I would certainly recommend one as a back up but they can't cut it if you juice a lot, especially vegetables.
How it works:
It works exactly the same as a masticating juicer except it is powered by your arm!
I am not going to list the main advantages or disadvantages of this machine against centrifugal and masticating juicers because it really is a different animal and I don't think it is a fair comparison. What I will say to sum them up is cheap, portable, a good back up but not a serious juicing machine.
